Empowering Growth with On-Job Education


On-Job education (OJE) is not simply a buzzword in today’s corporate ecosystem. It is a practical and robust framework that enables employees to consistently enhance their skills and competencies with the ever-evolving work environments. By allowing employees to learn and grow while they perform their duties, OJE promotes an atmosphere of continuous learning and encourages a culture of innovation and improvement.

One of the most successful examples of implementing on-job education is at a multinational technology firm where I was previously employed. Every Tuesday was designated as “Training Tuesday”. The whole day was dedicated to growth, with a clear emphasis on sharpening our skills related to our work. It wasn’t a typical teaching session; it was much more interactive and engaging.

The management brought in external experts, internal leaders, and sometimes even our clients, to provide us insights about the latest trends, share their experiences, and guide us towards better practices. These sessions were tailored towards our specific work profiles, providing a relevant and effective learning opportunity.

I recall a certain moment during a session on customer relationship management. An expert from the field was discussing a critical issue that one of my colleagues was facing. As they delved deeper into the problem, each participant in the room began to offer their solutions based on their unique experiences and perspectives. This interactive problem-solving scenario not only solved my colleague’s issue but also provided us with an invaluable lesson on tackling similar situations.

Another significant aspect was the follow-up on these sessions. Once the Tuesday training was over, it wasn’t just forgotten. We were often given tasks related to what we learnt. If it was a session on Excel tricks, the following week might involve a project needing some of those tricks. If it was about a new coding language, we may be asked to tweak a few lines of our code using that language. This task-based approach ensured that we applied the knowledge we acquired.

Moreover, these sessions were not limited to technical skills. Soft skills like communication, leadership, time management, and teamwork were equally emphasized. I remember a session where we were asked to stage a mock 2-minute play in our teams. The catch was that each member had to play a role that was completely opposite to their personality at work. This made us understand the importance of empathy and stepping into others’ shoes, a crucial lesson in teamwork and leadership.

On-Job Education was not just a process; it became a part of our work culture. It boosted our confidence, fostered team spirit, and significantly enhanced our knowledge base. By integrating learning with our daily work routine, the concept of OJE doesn’t just prepare us for the future, but also makes the present much more productive and engaging.

The power of On-Job Education lies in its simplicity and effectiveness. By continuously learning and growing, we empower ourselves and our organizations. In an age where knowledge is the ultimate catalyst for growth, on-job education is not just an option, but a necessity.
